Spider-Noir

 

Nicolascage is playing both a film noir detective and a spider man and low-key that tells you most of what you would need to hear.

Nostalgic reliving of the classic film-noir era. So much reliving of that era that calling this show a neo-noir would be misleading. So much noir that the Wikipedia article of that genre is basically also a summary for what one might expect from that show. 

For the ones to lazy to check Wikipedia now: Black and white detective stories released between the 40s and the 60s. Cynical detectives, often veterans, confronted with femme fatal, women who are very emancipated and equally Cynical as the detective and therefore scary to them,....

You get the guist, even if you might not be familiar with movies of that era the tropes of that genre were so influential that you still get to see them in the modern era: Batman, Bladerunner and Sin City would be examples of the so called neo-noir.

And now we have Spider-Noir. Another work heavily influenced by that era. The difference here is that they really tried to make you feel like you are watching a piece from that time. Even though they did work with cgi and moving cameras and other techniques not faithful to that era of filmmaking, they still often have fight choreographies, camera angles and a set design that often is way closer to that era than what you might expect from a marvel series.

Is it in that nostalgia kinda simple and predictable? Yes. 

Still it feels refreshing, the combination between the spider myth and this style of filmmaking also is a whole lot of fun and Nic Cage just is the perfect actor for this kind of project. 

I really liked it. It felt like a solid proof of concept for a different type of nostalgia than what we usually get to see. Maybe this is not enough for me to consider it  the best show of the year, but it I'd definitely enough to recommend it to people who like either detective stories, older films, Nic Cage or Spiderman.
